This is what we think self-advocacy is

  • Self-advocacy is speaking up for yourself about how you want to live and what you want out of your life

  • Self-advocacy is people speaking up for themselves. They have got the right to speak up for themselves and for people to understand them

  • Self-advocacy is being in control of yourself and your rights and what you want to do, not what other people tell you to do

  • Self-advocacy is taking control of your own life, not letting people take over your life and make you do things you don't want to do in your life

  • Self-advocacy is living independently if you want to independence is quite a big thing. Independence means where you can live in your own flat without your parents being there, being independent means doing what you want. If you want to fly a kite you can go and fly a kite. If you want to go to America you can (if you have the money). It is having a life, just being yourself. It is being respected. Sometimes you need support to be independent, to do what you want. Being independent doesn’t just mean doing everything yourself without support.

  • Self-advocacy is speaking up for other people with learning difficulties as well. Sometimes people can't speak, they do sign language. It is especially important to speak up for other people with learning difficulties in meetings

  • Self-advocacy is about being powerful and feeling strong

  • Self-advocacy is hard sometimes
